The PE also was shown in experiments to allow currents to flow uphill. This is the equivalent of spring water flowing uphill against gravity to do work. When the external voltage was turned to zero, a current *still remained*. Even when the electric or magnetic polarity was reversed some current still remained. The energy of some of the liberated electrons is high enough to overcome the retarding potential to reach the collector plate in the experiments. These experiments won two Noble Prizes, one for each for Einstein and Millikan.

3, 4, 5, ...in mathematics. An entire newcomer should not expect to obtain from the following few pages a full understanding and appreciation of the subject, which is associated with the illustrious names of Ludwig Boltzmann and Willard Gibbs and treated in textbooks under the name of 'statistical thermodynamics'. If you fill an oblong quartz tube with oxygen gas and put it into a magnetic field, you find that the gas is magnetized. The magnetization is due to the fact that the oxygen molecules are little magnets and tend to orientate themselves parallel to the field, like a compass needle. Bu…

The first of these experiments was performed somewhere around 1812 by Professor Domenico Lino Morichini (also written Morrichini in google searchs) of Rome, Italy. You won’t find an original cite to his work but it is detailed in many other papers of the time period. Many other scientists have given detailed descriptions of his experiments. They were quite simple. Morichini reported to have magnetized iron just by illuminating it with violet light derived from sunlight! He got the UV light using one of Newton’s prisms in the experiment to separate out the light frequency from the others.

In order to prove experimentally the existence of magnetic current for the first time, researchers mapped [Onsager’s 1934 ](http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Lars_Onsager.aspx)theory of the movement of ions in water onto magnetic currents in a material called spin ice. I have introduced you to [Onsager reciprocity relationship](http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Lars_Onsager.aspx) before in the blog. It describes how ions flow naturally below their molecular order. It describes how ions flow in relations to other things around it. In the lab scientist tested the theory by applying a magnetic fi…

Low-strength magnetic fields triggered onset and offset evoked potentials, indicating that the detection process was a form of sensory transduction; whether the field interacted directly with an ion channel or indirectly via a signaling cascade is unknown. By analogy with electrosensory transduction in lower life forms, we hypothesized that the evoked potentials were initiated by a force exerted by the induced electric field on an ion channel in the plasma membrane. We applied a rapid magnetic stimulus (0.2 ms) and found that it produced evoked potentials indistinguishable in latency, magnitud…

**That was when a magnetic field’s effect is no longer sensed by human tissues, it also means electrons had to be transferred from one mass, his, to another of lesser electric charge by the laws of electricity. He lost his electrons to space! We use this principle in bone stimulators in spine surgery, also in reverse. We use small magnets to generate magnetic fields to increase bone growth. Essentially, the Russian cosmonaut lost electrons from his body into space to cause this osteoporosis in 437 days! Electrons flow from the largest pool of electron density to the small pool, this is why the…

It seemed to look just like a magnet with a north pole here and a south pole here. There are no magnets at all. You just had a coil of wire carrying the current in a certain direction. It goes like this. Then the magnetic field lines, which you plot by moving the compass needle, they do this. So all I'm trying to say is there are several phenomena going on, and the clue that you get is, why didn't I need this before, and why do I need it now? What is new in this problem compared to the problems I've solved? Can you see what's making this problem outside the realm of what we studied? What's the…

Modem equipment even enables us, by lowering the temperature, to reduce the heat motion to such insignificance that the orientating tendency of the magnetic field can assert itself, if not completely, at least sufficiently to produce a substantial fraction of 'complete magnetization'. In this case we no longer expect that double the field strength will double the magnetization, but that the latter will increase less and less with increasing field, approaching what is called 'saturation'. This expectation too is quantitatively confirmed by

Most people would bet that the change in needle behavior is more temperature dependent, than due to the innate magnetic effects in UV light, but my own mito-hacks taught me something new. Most people link magnetism with the Curie temperature and coolness, but I have deep sense UV light makes things more magnetic transiently than cooler temperatures do. This mito-hack likely will show you whether through making it easier to induced magnetization by UV light in the needle or by thermal expansion, the key is both processes can alter the needle’s rotational inertia. That inertia can then effect th…
